When we got back from our quick visit to the US (Wednesday), I flew to Hamburg the next morning. Gene came and joined me that night (Thursday). Then, we flew from Hamburg to Salzburg on Friday night.
We got in to the tiny little airport and were already blown away by the views. Salzburg is surrounded by the Alps and is absolutely beautiful! The next morning we got up and went for breakfast. We walked through the Mirabell Gardens, which is where MANY scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed at. The flowers in the gardens were all in bloom, sorry, except for the rose garden area. The tulips and lilacs were amazing. From the gardens you can see the castle at the top of the hill. We then walked along the river flowing through town and found several of the churches in town. We went in to the Salzburg Cathedral and were just blown away again. The paintings all over the church were amazing. The ceiling was just covered with frescos. From there, we walked around the city a bit more, saw the Mozartplatz (plaza with a statue of Mozart) and ended up running in to an amazing store. It had the blown out eggs that were painted for EVERY holiday and they had millions of them. They also had some amazing glass decorated Christmas ornaments. We bought two...one was the city scape and the other was some piano music for Silent Night as it was written in Salzburg. We ran in to an Irish couple in the store who told of us of another Christmas only store that we should visit...we found it right before we went home on Sunday, unfortunately it was closed. From there, we wandered around some more until our Sound of Music tour started. We got on a tour bus that had the Sound of Music actors/actresses painted on it and saw most of the sites of the Sound of Music. It was quite fun and saw some more amazing views outside of Salzburg. We got to see the gazebo where they sang "Sixteen going on Seventeen", the mansion/lake where some scenes were filmed, from a distance saw the road and trees where the kids were hanging from when the Baron and Baroness were returning home, the church/abbey where Maria and the Baron were married and more. After the tour was done, we wanted to go visit the fort high up on the hill that overlooks Salzburg. It took a bit of trying, but we eventually made it there. Amazing views from there!
On Sunday, we went back to the Mirabell Gardens. It was their Labor Day (May 1), so they were celebrating and had a small little orchestra/band set-up. We listened to them a while before wandering around town again. We tried to go in many churches, but since it was Sunday, some had services going on. We got to go in a few though. All the churches we saw were beautiful and definitely worth visiting. Very ornate and lots of paintings. By mid-afternoon it had started to rain a bit, so we ended up heading to the airport earlier.
