September...

The dreaded month has arrived.

I don't know how to handle this month anymore.

11 years ago we were putting together the last minute things for our wedding.  Our rehearsal was exactly 11 years ago on the day Owen was born...to the day even...Friday, Sept 13.  It was a lucky day for us then, or so we said.  Now, not so much.

We always planned our vacations around Labor Day so we could take advantage of the weekend and the extra day off without having to take a vacation day.  Road trip to see Iowa, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Colorado/family, friends in OKC and then back home again.  Cruise to see Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas and a bit of Long Beach.  Florida and Hurricane Francis.  Toronto, Niagara Falls.  Wisconsin Dells.  Myrtle Beach.  (Not necessarily in that order though).  Then we moved to Europe and didn't get to take too many vacations at this time of year.  The first year we went to Florence a bit later in Sept and fell in love with our favorite place in Europe.  The 2nd year, we actually spent our anniversary apart.  We went to Lucerne over the weekend before and enjoyed some beautiful scenery.  The last year, we went on a Mediterranean cruise to see Croatia, Greece, Turkey and in/out of Venice.  It was amazing.  We actually spent our anniversary in the US that year for my work.

Then came 2012.  Gene had the weekend prior to our anniversary off of work, so we decided to use some of our hotel points and go stay the weekend in Indy before Baby O came (we were thinking and hoping a few weeks later).  We drove over, walked around, enjoyed the beautiful weather, got some good food, went to the zoo and relaxed all weekend.  It was a great get away.  Little did we know that our lives would turn upside down a million times over less than a week later, the day before our anniversary.

This year, we will be celebrating Owen's first birthday with family and friends that support us in this journey.  I'm not sure how this will affect our anniversary going forward.  We'll always want to be around to celebrate with him, go visit him at the cemetery and it will always be bittersweet going forward.

Hugs to you as Owens birthday approaches. The first one is so hard. Jeff and I also have our anniversary 5 days after Angels birthday. It is hard to switch gears so quickly but I just like to focus on how we made it anothe year, especially after our loss. So many couples don't last when they lose a child, so be proud of your love and your strong relationship. Xo
